Historical notes

Our thermal baths are located on the Lucus Bormani, which is the ancient forest of Bormann, an ancient Celtic deity whose name means “underground hot springs”. The local tribes had great respect and reverence for this deity; the territory was later conquered by Roman legions, who razed the forest and replaced the worship of the ancient tribal deity with that of the Goddess Diana, from whom the names of the current municipalities in the area are derived. This is just a fragment of the millennia-old history of the Dianese Gulf. This history is narrated within the Archaeological Museum of Diano Marina, where the oldest finds discovered in the Dianese area are displayed: animal remains, fossils, and tools, all dating back to the Paleolithic. As mentioned, Romanization led to the forced abandonment of the worship of the god Borman and the introduction of the worship of the goddess Diana. However, the echo of the ancient indigenous deity remained strong in the Dianese Gulf. The area between Capo Berta and Capo Cervo was indeed named Lucus Bormani, meaning the sacred forest of Borman. The coastal settlement of Lucus Bormani lasted until the first half of the 7th century. The need to defend against invasions and plundering led to the fortification of the settlement on the hill behind the ancient Roman mansio, in the area where the municipality of Diano Castello now stands.
